About Endless Drift
Endless Drift is a purely contemplative app: no score, no timer, no destination. Start among the bioluminescent creatures of the deep, rise through moonlit water, past floating lanterns in the night sky and rippling auroras, all the way to nebulae and stars — one continuous world.
Swim upward to break the surface and keep climbing into space, or sink into the endless deep. When you stop steering, the little light drifts gently on its own — perfect to leave on and simply watch.
Before you begin you can choose where to start, the colour of the sky, and how fast you drift — set any of them to Random for a different world every time. Let go and it drifts on its own, and every so often you may come across an echo bloom, which answers with light and sound when you drift close.
How to drift
- In the start panel, pick a starting place, sky colour, and speed. Leave anything on Random if you like, or press "Drift at random" to begin without choosing at all.
- Steer with arrow keys, WASD, or by dragging; let go and it soon drifts on its own. Even after the interface has faded away, press Esc to open the options at any time.
- When you find a view worth keeping, open "Share this view" to get a link and QR code. Anyone who opens it starts drifting from the same spot in the same world.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a goal or an ending?
No. Endless Drift is purely contemplative — no score, no timer, no leaderboard. There is nowhere to reach and nothing to clear; you leave it on and watch, or wander wherever you feel like.
Do I have to steer?
Not at all. Auto-drift is the default: touch nothing and the little light gently travels the world by itself. Steer with the keys or by dragging whenever you like, and a few seconds after you let go it flows on its own again.
How do share codes work?
Pressing "Share this view" packs the world (its seed), your position, and the sky colour into a 19-character code starting with D1. Nothing is stored on a server — the browser that opens the code rebuilds the same world on the spot.
Can I revisit the same view later?
Yes. The world is determined by its seed, so the same place in the same world always shows the same scenery. Larger sights — the lighthouse, a whale's passage, an aurora surge — have fixed locations too, so keep the code and you can return any time.
What is the sound?
It is not an audio file — the browser synthesises the ambience in real time. Zero download means no loop seams, and the tone and reverb shift slowly with altitude. You can turn it off any time from the top-right button.
What about battery and performance?
It is built to be light: everything is drawn with Canvas 2D, no 3D engine, and when the tab is hidden both rendering and sound stop completely. With your system's reduced-motion setting on, the scene becomes a calm still picture.
